And then this morning Boss #3 called me into his office. I jokingly asked if I was in trouble, only to have him look at me rather sheepishly and say that it was "worse" than that. O_O Well, his retirement date has been moved up and, well, I won't have a job after December 2nd. (Bosses 1 and 2 do NOT get along and will NOT work together once #3 is gone, so no more business. And that means no more job. It sounds like Boss #1 (who owns the building/property) will keep running, but is going to have a book keeper (his cousin, I'm guessing?) in a couple times a week to "answer the phone" (buh, wut?).)
They've given me six weeks notice and Boss #3 was tripping over himself to let me know that they'll be 100% accommodating as far as holiday pay, vacation days, time off for interviews, etc. - "anything [they] can do to help." He felt REALLY bad: he seems to think this is his fault because it's his retirement that is causing the business to be restructured. (Actually, I'm rather pissed that Boss #1 made him do it, since #1 "promised" to keep me in the loop - and it's only because I was talking about the new car thing yesterday that they even SAID anything to me today (which was pretty damned considerate) - I don't know how long they were going to wait otherwise.)
I ended up telling Boss #3 that I've been thinking about starting a virtual assistant business since this talk started a month ago; while he couldn't speak on behalf of the other two, he said he can certainly see where they would be able to use my services on an as-needed basis, so that might work out for me.
They will lay me off, so I'll be able to collect EI; since I've never been on it in my life, I should max out, both in dollar amount and in length of time I'll receive cheques. It looks like Chebbar's practicum will lead straight into a job. If it does, I'll be able to take the time to make a go of the VA business. HOPEFULLY we'll be fine. I'm pretty sure we will, but y'all KNOW I'm Chicken Little, so I am fighting a "the SKY is falling!!1!one!" moment. Stop. Breathe. Right? We'll be fine. We'll be fine.

You WILL be fine!!!! Look at this as an opportunity to begin fresh & do something exciting, like start your business. And remember The Band has got your back sweet lady!! *muah*
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear the job news but my gut feeling is that this will really work out well for you! You can take a little time for you for starters. You gotta do that. You deserve it. Then you can give the new business a real go... something you have to do as you will always regret it if you don't at least try. If it doesn't work out that's ok too... you put yourself out there and tried!! If it does work out then fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYou will definitely be fine. I have no doubt about it. Just remember that fine might not always be exactly what you were expecting or wanted but that doesn't mean it can't be really, really good. We don't always know what's good for us until it happens. What's that saying again.... "What's for you won't go by you!"
You can do it. I believe in you 100%.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice of them to actually tell you something. *sarcasm* Good luck with the new business, I hope you make a huge success out of it.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how your VA biz idea was going - and it sounds good :)
ReplyDeleteI wish you all the best luck in getting it to work so that it is do-able. It is awesome that you will get EI and that Chebbar basically has a job already when he is done. I think things might actually be going your way in the whole scheme of things.
You know you've always got your blogger/twitter/internet friends to shout out to when you've got questions, frustrations, brags, etc - we are here for you :)
You will be great. I think your business idea sounds like a fantastic idea. I know how you feel though, I would be freaking out I think but this has the potential to be really great. You've got a good business idea and if you've got to be out of a job, the best way it seems is to get laid off so that EI is there for you. EI is there especially for people like you who have always worked and contributed and find themselves without their job through no fault of their own.
ReplyDeleteBig hug!
It sounds both scary (because change is) and an awesome opportunity!
ReplyDeleteYou will be fine. You will be so much more than fine.
ReplyDeleteBecause you are awesome, and that's all there is to it.
I get it...... I totally get it.... I'm self employed... off the internet running a consignment store... It's not pulling a profit yet and I have employees.... Hubby has worked for the same guy for almost 15 years (job security!) but recently work has become spotty and we found out his boss is retiring when his youngest graduates high school (shes a freshman - first of 4 years)... so now he's considering his options and told me tonight he's ready to quit his job, cash out his retirement (401K), take time off to fix up the other half of our house, and rent it out as a Duplex, and then go to work doing carpentry/construction as self employed... and I'm freaking out about the possibilities!
